  1. Why is the scan count different than the number of items found?

Some malware requires the presence of several specific matches. If the required parts are not present then we conclude it was something else and not the anticipated malware.

  2. How do I start my computer in Safe mode?

There are two methods that can be used to restart your computer in Safe Mode. One uses the [F8] key during startup while the other uses a System Configuration utility.

Note: All versions of windows with the exception of Windows 3.1x and Windows NT can be started in Safe Mode. Windows 95 and 2000 must use the [F8] mode as there is no System Configuration utility for it. [F8] MethodThe method using the [F8] key is always the same and can be done by following the instructions below. If the System Configuration utility does not work, this method should always work.

    1. Restart your computer
    2. As soon as the computer begins to restart, start pressing the [F8] key repeatedly, but do not hold it down
    3. A startup menu will appear; Use your arrow keys to select Safe Mode
    4. Press [Enter]

System Configuration utility MethodThe method using the System Configuration utility is different for each version of windows. Please select the version of windows that you are using below.
